Job description: See details below Reports to: Program Associate, Common Cents Fellow Last day to apply: When positions are filled Start date: September 2008 “Having the diversity of responsibilities in so many areas is a unique opportunity you couldn’t anywhere. It definitely redefines what an intern is. It’s what an internship should be: you learn and you grow.” -Former Penny Harvest School Support Intern, 2007 Have you ever felt dwarfed by the magnitude of the world’s social issues? Do you care about reforming the education system? Do you believe youth can make a difference? Do you want a meaningful opportunity to connect your classroom learning to the work of an innovative, prestigious, and growing non-profit? At Common Cents Penny Harvest, we believe in the capacity of young people to make a positive difference in their community. Join us to help over 750 NYC schools make this come to life as part of the Penny Harvest. The Penny Harvest is an educational service-learning program that involves young people aged 4 – 14 years in their community and, in turn, builds the skills for democratic citizenship. In the fall, students gather pennies by the ton and then research community needs and solutions that they can contribute to by making cash grants and doing service projects of their choice! You, too, can make a real difference in your community. Each year, Common Cents hires a group of School Support Interns to support a corps of approximately 30 NYC public schools that implement the Penny Harvest program for a paid academic-year internship. Interns spend a large percentage of their time in public schools and hold weekly office hours to support the day-to-day running of the program and organization. Interns are provided with ongoing professional development to support their responsibilities, provide educational enrichment and build life-long skills. Commitment: Approximately 10 hours a week, during the academic year, including 4 set office hours per week. Semester internships possible, though year-long candidates are preferred. Qualifications: We are seeking highly motivated, capable interns who are interested in helping NYC school children. Undergraduate students of all majors encouraged to apply. A greater emphasis will be placed on prior experience working with youth, responsibility and reliability for students pursuing a major other than education. Compensation: Interns are paid between $750-$1500, pending the length of the internship and contingent upon completion of the program. Year long candidates preferred. (All figures are approximates at this time). To apply: Submit resume along with application (including personal statement detailed in application) to interns@commoncents.org. Applications will be accepted until positions are filled. Candidates who qualify will be contacted for an interview. Application is attached or available at www.PennyHarvest.org/nyc What is the Common Cents Penny Harvest?
In 1991, Common Cents revolutionized the world of giving with the inauguration of the Penny Harvest, which is now the largest child philanthropy program in the country. The Common Cents Penny Harvest grew from one child’s desire to feed the homeless. For the last 15 years, children from virtually every school and neighborhood in the New York City have been converting their innate compassion into action by collecting pennies and making grants to community organizations while learning crucial leadership and decision-making skills. Through the Penny Harvest, students see the concrete results of their first civic participation — the abstract becomes real.
Last spring New York’s young people made 1,378 grants to non-profits, such as women’s shelters, food pantries, animal rights organizations, community gardens, and senior centers, and carried out 366 community service projects, including block clean-ups and literacy programs. Common Cents New York, Inc. is an affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer. Women and minority candidates are encouraged to apply. |
