BALLSTON SPA SCHOOLS KICK-OFF THE HARVEST

November 19, 2009

Students in the Ballston Spa Central School District have started their annual collection for the Penny Harvest program once again this fall. Each of the six schools in the district are collecting pennies, and other donations, as part of the nationwide program that teaches youth to give back to their local community. After the collection, students of all six schools form Roundtables where they learn what the community’s needs are, discuss issues and select recipients of the funds collected in their respective schools. Last year, students collected an incredible $8,000 and awarded it to local charities at a ceremony in May. The participation in the Penny Harvest program is supported by a service-learning grant from State Farm Insurance Company.

State Farm has maintained a formal partnership with the Ballston Spa Central School District for nearly 20 years and is the district’s most prominent “Partner in Education”. In 2008-09, State Farm associates from the Ballston Spa Operation Center provided support for over 15 events and programs in the district. State Farm supports service-learning as a teaching method that enhances the academic achievement of students while engaging in service to the community. State Farm has long believed that for communities to thrive, young people must be empowered as leaders and decision-makers to address real issues and problems. State Farm also believes that through service-learning, young people can have structured opportunities to foster change in their communities, while at the same time become better prepared for college, the workforce, and active community involvement.

The Penny Harvest will be implemented via a variety of activities designed by the students in each school during the coming month. Check the website at www.bscsd.org for details about each school.
