As part of their new role with Common Cents they have undergone training to become Common Cents Fellows. Representing the message of civic engagement in the city, these Civic Corps fellows will help further Common Cents' mission of teaching New York City's children leadership skills, fostering their generosity and providing them ways to give back to their communities. Who are the Common Cents Fellows? Marianne Cabe is an education enthusiast who taught English in China for a few months last year. Through volunteering at various organizations-- from Circle K to local shelters-- Marianne formed a desire to empower youth while strengthening communities through the education sector. RANDOM FACT: She gravitates toward "orange-colored" things. Micah Gibbens, a City Year Alumnus, served as a literacy tutor and mentor in the South Bronx. Being a Washington State native and a recent New Yorker, he joined NYC Civic Corps out of a newly discovered passion for curriculum development and as a promoter of civic engagement. RANDOM FACT: In his spare time Micah is teaching himself accordion. Layla Malavet, who has lived in North Carolina, Arizona, and Hawaii, previously volunteered as an ESL Teacher in Arlington, VA for two years, teaching language and life skills to new American immigrants. With this experience she found herself dedicated to volunteerism in America and proudly joined NYC Civic Corps to support the cause of giving back to the community. RANDOM FACT: Layla also happens to be a ChapStick fanatic. Magdalena Polec studied film, but switched to psychology when, after exploring various documentary films, she realized she also wants to dedicate time to viable causes such as the environment, education and poverty. Engaging as a service learner and a volunteer earlier this year, she wanted to join an organization that focused on education and community uplifting. Being placed with Common Cents as a NYC Civic Corps member she is able to explore her areas of interest. RANDOM FACT: Koalas are her favorite animals because they get to sleep all day in a tree. Arvin Temkar an avid writer, traveler, and social justice supporter found his way to New York City by joining the NYC Civic Corps after graduating with a B.A. in communication from Boston College in 2008. He is excited to be part of a nation-wide movement promoting service, volunteerism, and civic engagement. RANDOM FACT: He wants to live in all five boroughs during his time at Common Cents. |
