A few weeks ago I had the privilege of being on hand for a momentous occasion at JHS 190 Russell Sage in Forest Hills, Queens. It was the 1st annual Pasta Banquet, a glorious feast of five different pasta dishes, fresh French bread, enough soda to quench the thirst of a small army, and a plethora of delicious desserts. The cost of admission to this seemingly endless buffet of goodness was only five dollars for faculty, with all of the money going towards the school’s Penny Harvest. The total raised was $385, which meant that 77 ever-so-excited faculty members came together for three lunch periods to participate. Talk about getting staff involved! Of course, none of this would have been possible had one coach not simply asked another teacher to help her.
Laura Glass has been a Penny Harvest coach for almost as long as the Penny Harvest has been running in NYC schools. After this year’s Oct. 19th Professional Development session, Laura felt so inspired that she simply just asked one of the teachers she has taken classes with to be her co-coach. That teacher, and future star of the Pasta Lunch, is Jackie DaTorre, who is a special education teacher.
Jackie came up with the idea to use unused pasta from another school project to create an epic meal to raise money and faculty awareness. According to Laura, “It is such a relief to have someone with totally new ideas and energy to help out.” And it hasn’t hurt the Penny Harvest’s waistline at IS190 either….
