LEADING IN SERVICE: INTRODUCING OUR NEW PENNY HARVEST STAFF

September 1, 2011

Common Cents is proud to announce a whole fleet of new staff members!

Keith Hickman has joined our team as Program Director. Keith has been working with organizations that serve youth and families for the past 15 years. Prior to joining Common Cents, he worked at the New York City Department of Education, New Leaders for New Schools, and the Center for Court Innovation. Keith began his professional career in the early 90’s as a Gang Intervention Case Manager in Seattle, WA.

Representing the message of civic engagement in the city, we’re proud to welcome our 2011-2012 New York City Civic Corp members Nia Challenger, Kathleen Lynch, Michael Karp, Genesis Taveras, Stephanie Odino, Whitley Plummer and David Inkeles. The New York City Civic Corp is a special service opportunity initiated by Mayor Bloomberg in 2009. Common Cents is one of 30 organizations selected to receive a team of Civic Corps for the 2011-2012 year. Our seven Civic Corps members completed a two week intensive training lead by Common Cents staff to become Penny Harvest Schools Support Fellows and are now responsible for helping our volunteer Penny Harvest Coaches and Student Leaders boost service-learning at their schools.

Who are the Common Cents School Support Fellows?

A recent graduate of Howard University, Nia Challenger studied Spanish and Sociology and had the opportunity to volunteer with numerous non-profit organizations in both the New York and Washington D.C., such as Habitat for Humanity, Jumpstart and the Latin American Youth Center.  She is an avid traveler and has been to 4 continents.

Kathleen Lynch is a recent graduate of Drexel University with a B.S. in Entertainment and Arts Management and minors in Theatre and Business. Kathleen comes from a background in non-profit theatre with an interest in keeping arts education in schools and engaging youth in their community.

Michael Karp graduated from the University of Wisconsin at Madison with a B.S. in Anthropology, focusing on Archaeology. During an archaeological excavation in Israel, he participated in a community service project that gave local school children a chance to see and experience the ancient history of their city by working on the archaeological site.

A New York City native, Genesis Taveras graduated from SUNY Purchase College with a B.A. in Journalism and a minor in Political Science.  Genesis comes to Common Cents with experience working in state government, community organizations and schools focusing on youth and community issues.

Stephanie Odino is a Penn State graduate with a degree in Crime, Law and Justice with a minor in Labor Studies and Employment relations. She aspires to be an immigration lawyer to improve the way of life of immigrants in the United States of America.

Whitley Plummer is a graduate from Stony Brook University; she majored in Political Science with a specialization in IR/Comparative Politics and Public Policy. While at Stony Brook she became involved with organizations that engender change by communicating information pertinent to students.

A proud native New Yorker, David Inkeles is a recent graduate with a B.A. in Government-History from Skidmore College. David is passionate about civic engagement and volunteerism, especially pertaining to education, youth and community development.
