Last year, students from PS 27 in Brooklyn chose the New York Says Thank You Foundation as one of their grantees. Recently, the foundation’s founder and executive director Jeff Parness reported back to the students that their gift helped rebuild the home of a family from Groesback, TX after it was destroyed by a 2006 F3 tornado. The New York Says Thank You Foundation sends FDNY firefighters and other NYC volunteers, on the 9/11 anniversary, to rebuild communities around the country affected by natural or man-made disasters as a way to commemorate the extraordinary love and generosity extended to the city by Americans from across the US in the wake of 9/11. Last spring Parness went to PS 27 to speak with “The Philanthropists” Roundtable about the work of his organization. After talking with Jeff and touring their local firehouse, students on the roundtable decided to provide a grant so that two firefighters could go to Texas and volunteer. During his most recent visit, Parness, along with two FDNY firefighters, gave a slide presentation to the students to show them exactly what they were able to do with their grant. “What was really amazing was that they totally ‘got’ that their donations enabled FDNY firefighters from their local firehouse to travel to Texas on their behalf and help the Vincent family rebuild. There were a lot of reactions and questions the kids asked that brought tears to my eyes,” said Parness describing his conversation with the students. The students at PS27 were so excited to hear about the good their grant did, that they are considering supporting New York Says Thank You again this year to help send volunteers to Kansas to rebuild a town hit by a tornado.
