The roundtable of P.S. 48 William C. Wilcox immediately knew animal issues had to be one of the causes they donated to this year. Despite the roundtable’s strong efforts in researching the issue, Penny Harvest coach Terry Guthrie knew her roundtable of 5th graders needed more information to truly grasp the issue and solution. Thus, for the second consecutive year Terry, her roundtable leaders and two parent chaperones planned a trip to Manhattan to visit the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). Making the trek from Staten Island to the Upper East Side, the 19 student leaders first received a presentation and question-and-answer session with an ASPCA representative, Beverley Pietrucha. “It was really effective,” said Terry, who is a Parent Coordinator. “Beverley came on the bus, spoke to them and answered almost all of our questions before we even went through the door. The kids listened and were able to understand animal issues much more deeply.” The roundtable was then divided into two groups and went on a tour of the facility led by Pietrucha. The leaders saw where the cats and dogs stayed before becoming adopted and how the staff interacted with the animals. At the end of the trip, Terry reflected, “I think trips are really important. The kids are able to visualize the issue, see what goes on in these organizations and how important this money is to the organizations. Kids only see these things on TV and won’t really understand until they are there.” The student leaders loved the trip, snapping photos and learning about how the ASPCA serves all of the animals. The parent chaperones were so impressed, she said, that one even adopted a dog! |
