Home > Rebound Harvest for P.S. 46
January 1, 2012
When thinking about last year’s harvest, Penny Harvest coach Susan Tasso couldn’t help but feel disappointed. After many consecutive years of abundant harvests of 25 sacks or more, P.S. 46 in Staten Island had only managed to collect nine. Susan, a paraprofessional and 8 year Penny Harvest Coach, knew she had to make a change. Her answer was the Penny Olympics. Instead of pitting every classroom against each other in a school-wide competition, Susan and her student leaders created four school-wide teams that crossed school lines. Each team had a class from every grade, along with a sprinkling of school staff from the various departments, including custodial, kitchen, and office staffs, as well as the safety agents and the nurse.
“The result was new friendships, connections, alliances between teachers and students who never even knew each other, and that has brought the whole school together, “ Susan observed. “The results have been amazing,” says Susan – and, Sara Cottone, Suzette Meyerson and Linda Chirichella, her co-coaches, concur. “We’ve already gathered more pennies than last year, and I think we’ll break all records!”
