VOLUNTEERS ASSEMBLE OVER 3000 PENNY HARVEST KITS

August 30, 2007

Ever wonder how Common Cents gets program materials into the hands of over 500,000 children across the country?  The answer is with lots of help from our friends!  On August 18th and 19th, nearly 200 volunteers, along with Common Cents staff and alumni, participated in the Second Annual Kit Assembly Event.  During the weekend-long event volunteers assembled 3,240 Penny Harvest Kits, all of which will be dispersed to participating schools throughout the country in September.

The event took place in the gymnasium at the School at Columbia University, thanks to Principal Annette Raphael who graciously hosted Common Cents for the weekend.  Penny Harvest materials (including the curriculum guide, 06/07 Yearbook, Penny Sacks, Penny Bags, Leader Pins, and the Caring Family Calendar) covered the walls from floor to ceiling as this exercise in logistics began.

It took hours to assemble all the needed kits, but volunteers carefully packed each box, knowing their efforts would enable students to gather pennies, and then turn those pennies into grants and service for their communities.  Students in NYC/Metro NY, the Capital Region of NY, Colorado, Florida and Seattle will all benefit from their hard-work!

Thanks again to the many volunteers who lent a hand over the weekend, and a special thanks to the volunteer teams from Con Edison, Best Buy and NY Cares.
