Cecilia Coats and Penny Harvester, Mia Keller

SCHOOL OF EXCELLENCE
SNAPSHOT 07/08

Coach: Cecilia Coats

Harvest Total: 20 sacks

Grants Made: Horizons, Brandon House, Special Olympics Event, Pennies for Peace and Sunset Park

Student Leaders: Grades 3, 4, 5

Coach Experience: 1st Year

At Graland, the Penny Harvest Coach, a 4th grade teacher and lower school Service Learning Coordinator, chose to present the program to 4th and 5th graders by asking for volunteers to write letters about their skills as leaders and desire to work for service leraning. Of those letters, 6 students were picked from 5th grade and 9 were chosen from 4th grade to become leaders of the Penny Harvest.

Students at Graland chose to perform skits  and prepare presentations in each classroom to get their fellow students involved. Once pennies were collected the current leaders chose to elect 3rd graders to participate in the Roundtable. Throughout the year leaders wrote articles for the "Friday Flyer," a weekly electronic newsletter distributed to parents. "My role as Service Learning Coordinator really helped with bringing the Penny Harvest project to life. This knowledge helped me discuss how Penny Harvest would meet each grade's service learning needs." Said Mrs. Coats.

In order to deepen their relationship with the Seniors of Sunset Park, students at Graland chose to purchase a ping pong table and supplies for the Seniors. They delievered the materials and spent the day playing games with members of that community.
