For Bill Roberts, being involved in the Penny Harvest this year helped to create a sense of community amongst everyone in a new school. They began with an assembly for the younger students to explain what “community” and “philanthropist” means. Students shared the Penny Harvest dvd, placed special containers in the office to keep the school motivated, and also spent two weeks in front of King Soopers in Stapleton collecting donations and explaining the purpose of the program. Information was sent home in newsletters (Bobcat Bulletin), and the Roundtable met several times per week to collect, weigh, count and fill bags with pennies.

The Roundtable, P.A.W.S. (Philanthropists at William Roberts School) met weekly after the actual Penny Harvest to discuss what the school wanted to accomplish with grant making. The students at Bill Roberts completed two Service Projects – the canned food drive for the Food Bank of the Rockies, as well as donated various items from the school’s lost and found to the Colfax Community Network.

What seemed to make an even bigger impact inside the school was the recognition award that Linda Katchen created. Each student that participated in the Penny Harvest was recognized as a Philanthropist and given an award for their efforts.
