January: philanthropy roundtable Conference

RSVP for roundtable teachers conference! Check your email for your invitation and RSVP now. New upgrades will be unveiled, special secrets will be shared, and the best roads to Penny Harvest success will be explored in a lively exchange.  Date preference is first come first serve.

Start off the new year with an exciting challenge! Your students will need to allocate their Penny Harvest funds. By researching needs in their community and interviewing experts in the field, your Student Leaders will decide how to allocate their funds through community grants and service projects of their choice.  Go to Make Grants in the Curriculum section for resources and tips.

700 schools around the city completed the Gather Pennies phase! Congratulations to our Coaches, Student Leaders, and their entire school community for collecting nearly 10,000 sacks!  All of your hard work has paid off and you have a lot to be proud of.
December Notes

It's Penny Pick-up Time! You should have received your pick-up date from our office.  If you are unaware of the day your pennies will get picked up, please contact your school support immediately at 212-579-0579.  Penny pick-up will take place in early December. For a smooth pickup, download a sample receipt and view helpful tips.

Check your mail in the next few days for color ties to secure your Penny Harvest sacks.

Finishing Strong
Use your pick-up date as motivation for your school to meet the 25 sack challenge.  Work with Student Leaders to recognize and thank all of those that have contributed to your school's Harvest.  Plan a Tally Rally to unite the entire school or give out certificates to the top harvesting students and classrooms. Visit the Finishing Strong section on the Curriculum Page for ideas.

Look ahead to Make Grants

If your school is unable to meet the 25 sack challenge, there's still an opportunity for students to participate in the Roundtable phase and allocate funds to various causes within the community.  Let your school support contact know that you want your students to be part of the Roundtable by calling 212-579-0579.

November Notes
We’ve reached the mid-way point for the Gather Pennies phase! Please make sure to fill out your Mid-Harvest Estimate and return it to your school support by November 10th. In order for us to pick up your pennies, we need an estimate of the number of sacks your school will collect by the END of the harvest. If this form is not received by November 10th, we cannot guarantee that your coins will be scheduled for pick-up. Don’t delay, fill out your Mid-Harvest Estimate today!

Keep the Momentum Going!

Now that the Penny harvest has been launched in your school for a few weeks, make sure you are keeping the whole school involved! Be sure to complete your Wheel of Caring and post it for the school to see. Having trouble engaging the entire student body? Why not try hosting a Penny Olympics in your school or perhaps crown a Penny Princess? What is a Penny Princess/Prince? A great strategy to engage the entire school and increase your harvest! Recognize the top harvesting class each week by crowning the class' teacher as the Penny Princess/Prince for that week. Be sure to encourage your student leaders to keep motivating the school trough posters, the PA system, and classroom visits.

Exciting new partnership!
Through a partnership with the 9/11 Memorial and Museum and the NYC Department of Education, Penny Harvest schools have a unique opportunity to be part of the final construction of the September 11th Memorial and Museum site.
  • In honor of this partnership, all Penny Harvest Coaches are granted access to visit the memorial before the general public. Check your inbox for an email from our Program Director Keith Hickman sent out on October 25 to sign-up.
  • In the early weeks of November, all NYC schools will receive 9/11 Memorial Pins for every student in their school to honor the tenth anniversary. Use this tool to engage and motivate your school to harvest a little harder. In the spring, students have the option of making a grant to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum.
  • Reflect and discuss 9/11 with your students. Visit the 9/11 Memorial and Museum website to download curriculum aligned with Common Core for each grade level.
