New York City Students Study Earthquake and Recovery Efforts, Give $36,309.24 to three exceptional organizations on the ground

On March 11th, 2011, the Tohoku (Northeastern) region of Japan was devastated by a catastrophic earthquake and tsunami. While the tragedy impacted everyone in the region, it dealt an especially difficult hand to the children of Tohoku, thousands of which were left homeless, parentless, as well as displaced.

But their need for help didn’t go unheeded...

Within days of the disaster, Penny Harvest students throughout the five boroughs of New York City began organizing in their schools.  Some chose to raise funds through bake sales and other drives, while a large number of students and coaches called the Common Cents offices requesting assistance and offering suggestions in developing a citywide response.

Working with sister organizations and knowledgeable Penny Harvest Coaches, Common Cents quickly developed curriculum materials around a set of eligible organizations working on the ground in Japan to bring immediate relief.  It also created a Japan Earthquake Global Relief Fund, and sent letters to all Penny Harvest Roundtables urging student leaders to consider pledging a portion of their collections to the fund for Japan.

As has been the case with some of the more devastating tragedies over the past two decades, the response from our Penny Harvesters was enormous.  In all, Student Leaders from 166 Penny Harvest schools committed $36,309.24 to the Global Relief Fund for Japan in 2011.

On April 29, 2011, participants joined together to rally behind a Global Relief Conference for the recovery of Japan. Whether you were able to attend last year’s event or not, step back in time to experience the 2011 Global Relief Conference and learn more about the amazing impact Penny Harvesters had on Japan’s relief efforts.
Since 1996, Penny Harvest students have contributed a total of $672,197.41 to relief efforts in response to international and local disasters.
