about cenyc The Council on the Environment of New York City (CENYC) has been dedicated to making New York City a cleaner, greener, healthier place to live, work and play for nearly forty years. We do so in many ways:
- We run green market farmers markets so that people can buy fresh healthy food grown close to home direct from the farmer who grew it;
- We teach people how to recycle and to make less waste through our Office of Recycling Outreach and Education;
- Our Greening Program helps community groups create beautiful gardens and play space in neighborhoods that often have none;
- Our Environmental Educators teach intermediate and high school students how they can make positive changes in their neighborhoods.
CENYC knows that today’s young people will will have an earth that is different from the one that their parents and grandparents lived in. Less open space, more people, more cars, global warming, water and air that is polluted are all problems that they may face. We believe that as young people learn about pressing environmental problems, they will use their imagination and creativity to come up with solutions. We know that kids make the best teachers for other kids (and adults) through their examples.
WHAT CAN YOU DO? Create a small recycling program that can make a big difference. Download instructions for starting a recycling program at your school.
We know too that kids are able to make a big difference in the world and that when they put their minds to it – they can achieve it. We’re counting on it! CENYC wants you to start taking action today.
