By Saliha Olgun, Training Fellow As part of their science studies, the roundtable had conducted an extensive study on the reptiles, monitoring their emergence at the nearby Central Park Turtle Pond. They kept detailed and accurate scientific measurements of the turtles, which they recorded in their journals. So it was little wonder when they picked the needs of turtles and the preservation of Central Park as the community issues they wanted to address on their roundtable. Curriculum connections like the one at The Computer School occur in Penny Harvest schools across the city every year. In addition to learning about philanthropy, students are able to take their excitement about their cause and channel it into excitement about school curriculum and vice versa. This roundtable not only donated to the tortoise society and the Central Park Conservancy, but they also plan to do a planting project in the Turtle Pond area of the park. Saliha Olgun of Parsippany, New Jersey, graduated from George Mason University. During her second year at Common Cents, she plans to begin law school to pursue her passion of children’s rights advocacy. Click here for the NEXT STORY. |
