“We always get emotional when the pennies are picked up,” explains Cara Usatch, Penny Harvest Coach at PS 398 in East Flatbush. Nineteen tiny kindergarten hands quietly waved goodbye to 28 sacks of pennies (840 pounds!) as the monstrous penny pick-up truck carted them away, but the youngsters would soon wave a happy hello to some new friends due to the Penny Harvest experience...

What's New at Common Cents and the Penny Harvest

Colorado Schools Harvest $52,987.36 during the 2009/10 Penny Harvest!

43 schools collectively harvested coins for more than 2 months for this year's Penny Harvest. Each school will continue into the Roundtable phase with at least $1,000 for their grant-making budget. Stay tuned to see where the students decide to grant all of that money!

Colorado Welcomes 43 Schools to the 2009/10 Penny Harvest!

The Penny Harvest has expanded in 2009/10 from 31 schools to 43 schools across the Greater Front Range. We are pleased to welcome the St. Vrain Valley School District and Aurora Publi to this year's program!! 10 school districts, and a handful of private schools are gearing up for their Kick-Off Assemblies, and the Harvesting Phase, with a goal to beat last year's Harvest total of $38,996.96!!

In this economy, you might be surprised that people have a couple extra cents to spare for a great cause like the Penny Harvest. In 1991, the Penny Harvest was born in New York City. It had a simple message: Students collect pennies, then donate them to a selected charity.

Area students collect 3.7 million pennies for local organizations

June 20, 2009
Denver, CO - Students from 31 Colorado elementary, middle and high schools have officially harvested 3.7 million pennies, or $37,826.02, for local charities through the Young Philanthropists Foundation's 2008-2009 Penny Harvest.

FEBRUARY
Charged with identifying important issues in their communities, students take a hands-on approach as they conduct interviews and explore their neighborhoods.
